Vaal Oewer was proclaimed in 1979 as a riverside town on the banks of the Vaal River. The name is Afrikaans for 'grey bank'. The river name itself is Afrikaans for 'grey river', and possibly refers to the colour of the muddy water. (GPS coordinates: 26.7318 S, 27.5972 E).
