Sharpeville was established in 1942 and named after John Lillie Sharpe, who was mayor of the Vereeniging Town Council from 1934 to 1937. It is where the infamous Sharpville massacre occurred, on the 21 March 1960, when South African police opened fire on demonstrators, killing 69 people and wounding 178. (GPS coordinates: 26.6861 S, 27.8756 E).
