Vanderbijlpark began as a steel producing town and was proclaimed in 1949. It was named after Dr Hendrik Johannes van der Bijl (1887-1948), the first chairman of Eskom and founder of the South African Iron and Steel Industrial Corporation (Iscor). (GPS coordinates: 26.6988 S, 27.7984 E).
