Klerksdorp is named after the first landdrost, Jacob de Clerq (popularly De Klerk) (1791-1888). The town has been in existence since 1837 but was only named in 1853. After the discovery of gold in 1886 it experienced a rapid period of growth. (GPS coordinates: 26.8853 S, 26.6387 E).
