Umlazi takes its name from the Mlazi River that flows nearby. uMlaza is the Zulu word for 'whey', the liquid remaining after milk has been curdled and strained. Legend has it that when King Shaka passed through this area, he did not want to drink the water from the Mlazi River, claiming that had the sour taste of whey. On the 1 May 1995, at a May Day celebration at Umlazi Stadium, President Nelson Mandela was escorted from the stadium in a armoured vehicle when shots were fired. Umlazi is also the place where Gerard Bhengu (1910-1990), a South African artist, died. His paintings are included in art collections at University of Fort Hare, the Albany museum in Graham's Town, and Museum Africa. (GPS coordinates: 29.9662 S, 30.8875 E).
