Durban was established in 1835 by the King Shaka in 1828. Originally named Port Natal, the new settlement was named after Sir Benjamin D'Urban (1777-1849) in 1835, Governor of the Cape from 1834 to 1838. Until about 1870 its name was spelt D'Urban. In 1935 it achieved city status and is now a major port and popular holiday destination. (GPS coordinates: 29.8796 S, 30.9834 E).
