Phoenix was named by Thomas Watkins in reference to the replanting of his sugar cane fields that were previously destroyed by fire (ie, his new fields 'rose from the ashes'). Mahatma Ghandi also founded a farm settlement there. (GPS coordinates: 29.7029 S, 31.0102 E).
